Family photos at James Gardens: a local photographer's guide

James Gardens is the west end's best formal-garden location for family photos: terraced flower beds, stone bridges over spring-fed streams, a gazebo, and the Humber River right behind, all a two-minute walk from free parking at 99 Edenbridge Dr.

Why it works for families
The gardens are compact: beds, bridges, gazebo and riverbank sit within a short loop, so you get five distinct backdrops without marching kids between locations. Paths are stroller-friendly, the duck pond by the lot buys goodwill with toddlers before the session even starts, and the gazebo gives shelter if the sky turns.
Parking and logistics
Park in the main lot at 99 Edenbridge Dr, the one beside the duck pond, and take the path down into the gardens. Parking is free. Washrooms are seasonal, so plan accordingly with little kids, and give yourself ten minutes of buffer: the walk down is short but the pond is magnetic.
Permits: handled, not your problem
James Gardens is one of the City of Toronto's designated high-demand parks where commercial photography requires a paid permit. That permit is the photographer's responsibility. If you book a session here, the only thing you need to bring is your family.
The light, hour by hour
The gardens sit on a slope above the Humber, so late afternoon into early evening is the sweet spot: the light drops low, filters through the big trees and turns the beds gold. Mornings are quieter and softer. Midday works only under the tree canopy.
Season by season
Spring brings the first bulbs and blossom; summer is peak bloom, when the beds are the backdrop; fall turns the slope orange and the crowds thin; winter strips it to structure, which suits moody portraits more than family minis. The gardens photograph well from May through late October.
